Hassan was a member of the Alaouite dynasty. He allied Morocco with the United States in the Cold War era. He adopted a market-based economy that centered on tourism, agriculture, and phosphates. King Hassan II passed away on July 23, 1999 at the age of 70. He died from natural causes and was buried in the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. He had five children with his wife Lalla Latifa Hammou and none with his wife Lalla Fatima bint Qaid Ould Hassan Amhourak, who he both married in 1961.
